How to calculate a tip and split the bill
Calculate the tip, final total and per-person amount in a few clear steps.
Tip amount
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. Add the tip to the bill to get the final total.
Example
For a 240 bill and a 15% tip, the tip is 36 and the final total is 276. Split equally among 3 people and each person pays 92.
Before splitting
Decide whether the tip is based on the pre-tax or post-tax amount according to your preference and local practice, then use the same basis consistently.
