Weighted average explained with a simple example

See how weights change an average and how to calculate a weighted result correctly.

How it works

Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, then divide by the total weight. If weights are percentages that total 100%, the final division is effectively by 100.

Example

An 80 worth 40% and a 90 worth 60% gives (80×40 + 90×60) ÷ 100 = 86. The value with the larger weight has more influence on the result.

Check your weights

Weights do not always need to total 100 if you divide by their total, but they must use a consistent scale.
